If you’re an audiophile or a photographer, you know how important it is to have enough storage on your laptop to keep your files and data. All of a computer’s storage capacity is housed in the hard drive where your files reside. The hard drive also boots up your computer and stores your applications. But, storage space has its limits and the more you save, it might cause your laptop to move a little more slowly. We know how frustrating it can be when your mobile device hits its storage limit, so just imagine what it would feel like when it happens on your computer! In time, your computer might end up with us for a repair, so we’d recommend cleaning up your storage to keep your computer in tip-top shape!
If you have a Mac computer, there are some quick tricks you can try to clear up some space on your drive. The most obvious might be to empty your trash can. Yes, it might be a little too obvious, but did you know that some Macs have multiple trash cans? To empty your main trash can, right click the trash can icon and select “Empty Trash”. If you use the Mail, iPhoto and iMovie applications, these each have their own trash cans. Once you empty the trash, the files are permanently deleted from the hard drive.
If you have applications on your computer that you rarely or never use, you can uninstall them to free up space. You can open a Finder window and select applications to see what is taking up space on your computer. You can sort the applications by their size, showing which applications are the largest. The larger the application, the more space it is taking up. If you don’t use it, uninstall it! Even when an application is uninstalled, it can leave behind little traces that still reside on your hard drive. You might consider using software that cleans up your hard drive and deletes these fragments. Software like Movavi Mac Cleaner can help find these fragments and free up your hard drive.
If you’re a PC user, there are also some great tips to help free up your space. Of course, we’ll remind you to empty your trash. After that, you can run a disk clean-up. Mircosoft suggests doing this whenever you need more space on your hard drive. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, select Disk Cleanup. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box in the Description section, select Clean up system files. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, select the check boxes for the file types that you want to delete, and then select OK.
Before performing any cleaning task, you’ll want to ensure your data is backed up properly. You can always use a cloud storage system or an external hard drive to store your files. If you routinely move your data to your hard drive, you can keep your computer’s storage capacity at healthy levels and keep your computer in great condition.
