What is Meta?

If it is one thing we know for sure it is that technology and social media are always changing. These fast-paced industries force even the top players to make important changes and pivots in direction. That is exactly what Facebook recently did. It was announced that Facebook is going through a bit of a rebranding process to “Meta”. Now, what does this mean for Facebook as we know it for the average user? Let’s dive into all the aspects of it and how it may affect you or your business.

Basics of Meta

Mark Zuckerberg’s main goal is to create the “Metaverse”, a virtual reality where people can experience a secondary way of life. The metaverse will include things from parks to shops to social gatherings. It’s hard to tell how the metaverse will end up.

So is the metaverse the next big advance that will revolutionize the way we all connect? Or is it just a catch-all term for existing technologies? According to arsTechnica’s report of the Meta keynote presentation, Zuckerberg said that “the best way to understand the metaverse is to experience it yourself, but it’s a little tough because it doesn’t fully exist yet.” Now that description is just about as clear as Facebook’s privacy policy. Mark Zuckerberg goes on to say, “You’re gonna be able to do almost anything you can imagine—get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create—as well as entirely new categories that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today.” Now, this sounds intriguing, and could definitely impact the future of technology.

What Does Meta Mean for You?

If the metaverse really takes off as Mark wishes, it will have a great impact on how we do business today. Now, we don’t think it is something that you need to start thinking about immediately as a business owner or consumer, but it is something that you should put on your radar. For the foreseeable future, Meta is simply an umbrella term for all of the businesses that Mark and Facebook currently own, so there is not much to be done at this current moment in time. Although, if you aren’t currently an avid Facebook and Instagram user, now might be a good time to jump on the bandwagon. The world of social networking and social media is bound to grow and grow quickly from here. So whether you are a business owner or just a consumer of technology, now is the time to embrace the future.
